Background

While technology has been rapidly expanding in Ghana, significant events occurred in 2009 that signaled the dawning of new investment opportunities in Ghana. Ghana has become recognized by the World Bank and the international community for its strong governance, and as a gateway to the Economic Community of West African States, a regional group of 15 West African countries. U.S. President Barack Obama chose Ghana for his first visit to sub-Saharan Africa to recognize Ghana as  "a truly admirable example of a place where governance is getting stronger, a thriving democracy."

In early 2009, Lee Clegg, a successful businessman from the United States, began working with Fred Ohene-Kena and other respected business leaders in Ghana to develop a website to make it much easier to invest in Ghana. (Mr. Clegg sold his highly automated wholesale insurance agency in 2009, UCPM, Inc., and began to focus on developments in Ghana.)

In March 2009, prior to President Obama's visit, Lee Clegg presented his ideas to John Atta Mills, President of Ghana, that eventually led to the development of this website. President Mills was pleased with the potential an international website could have in increasing investment and economic growth in Ghana.

Fred Ohene-Kena, a respected leader in Ghana, is a proponent of these objectives and the development of this website. It became clear that attracting investment to Ghana would best be achieved via a commercial website that has no government affiliation because of the business practice of avoiding association with political parties.

Mr. Clegg was able to build relationships with a number of key industry leaders, including the chambers of commerce from other nations. Because the chambers of commerce are working towards the same goals, they joined efforts with Mr. Clegg. Alhaji Abudulai, President of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce-Ghana, continues to play a lead role in coordinating efforts among industry leaders to develop the website's content.

The first industry meeting was sponsored by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce-Ghana on March 31, 2009. It is our belief that a unified business sector will be able to rapidly attract investment. It is our hope that hundreds of businesses in Ghana will choose to actively participate in this website.
